Back in 2014, we set out on a mission to bring customers more than just groceries. MyMagazine began as a way to deliver a personalized thank-you to millions of loyal shoppers by sharing inspiration, recipes and savings on their favorite products. You may have already noticed that the offers you receive in MyMagazine are often for the items you buy most — that’s why you’re able to use so many on your next shopping trip. Over the past 10 years, MyMagazine has helped save customers millions of dollars, making it easier for families to enjoy delicious, nutritious meals.

MyMagazine is also a treasure trove of food inspiration and fresh, seasonal recipes. From easy weeknight dinners to party-perfect menus and entertaining tips, there’s something for everyone. And as the printed MyMagazine has evolved, so has the online version. Now it’s easier than ever for customers to shop recipes online and add exactly what they need to their carts while browsing.

As we celebrate this milestone, we’re taking a look back at the top food trends and the biggest changes in grocery shopping — plus sharing some fun facts about The Kroger Co. that you might not know.

In honor of 10 years, here are 10 facts you might not know about our store:

1. Our company was founded in 1883 by Bernard “Barney” Kroger in Cincinnati, Ohio. He used his life savings of $372 to open his first grocery store, which was called The Great Western Tea Company.

2. Barney’s philosophy on fresh food — and really all food — was:

Be particular. Never sell anything you wouldn’t want yourself.

3. In 1901, we became the first grocery store in the country to operate its own bakery, producing 8,000–9,000 loaves of bread per day. Loaves were priced at just 2.5 cents!

4. By 1908, we were already in the grocery delivery business. But instead of today’s little branded trucks pulling up in front of your home, items were delivered by horse and wagon.

5. We’ve always been a pioneer in one-stop shopping. In 1930, our company opened its first supermarket, bringing together a grocery, meat market and bakery.

6. Customer feedback has always guided our decisions. It’s why we led the industry in marking perishable items with sell-by dates.

7. We’re committed to eliminating hunger in our communities and eliminating waste across the company by 2025. That’s why we’ve already diverted 80% of our waste from landfills. Learn More

8. Simple Truth® began offering affordable, high-quality natural and organic products in 2012. It has since become the largest natural and organic brand in the United States. Shop Simple Truth

9. Did you know you can opt in to Community Rewards, which allows customers to support favorite local organizations and nonprofits by simply shopping? That’s right. With each shop, we make a donation to whatever group you’ve selected. Learn More

Platter of cheeses

10. Ever wonder how we have such amazing cheese shops in some of our stores? That’s because we joined forces with Murray’s Cheese, an iconic New York cheese shop known for its award-winning selection. Shop Murray’s Cheese
