We’ve all been there — staring at a fridge full of random leftovers, wondering how to pull together a meal. Enter “fridge foraging,” where the goal is simple: Use up what you have in creative, delicious ways!

These recipes are designed to be flexible, so you can swap ingredients based on what’s lurking in your fridge. Whether it’s a few stray roasted veggies, some leftover roasted chicken, half a block of tofu or a handful of cooked grains, these meals will help you clear out your fridge and cut down on food waste.

Smart Tips: Organizing Your Fridge to Reduce Waste

Keep leftovers front and center.

Put items that need to be eaten soon right in front where you can see them. This way, they’re less likely to be forgotten.

Stack opened items on top of unopened items.

For example, if you have an open container of hummus, put it on top of the new container to remind yourself to finish it first.

Label containers with dates.

Write the date you opened something on the container to help you keep track of how long it’s been in the fridge.

Stash food in clear containers.

Clear containers make it easy to see what you have at a glance, so you’re more likely to use it up.

Plan meals around what’s left.

Before grocery shopping, check your fridge for ingredients that are nearing their end and plan your meals around those items.
